"The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in
contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire. With
too many wonders close inspection dispels both mystery and joy. Not so
with the wonder that is the horse."
So begins The Encyclopedia of the Horse, an extraordinary volume
devoted to humankind's most essential animal partner. Expertly folding
together the evolution of the horse with every major breed and its
contribution to civilization, author Elwyn Hartley, editor of Riding
magazine years and author of 30 books on horses, divides his
subject into 10 historically chronological chapters, covering "in
words and pictures, the development over 60 million years of the small
jungle animal into the various and sophisticated breeds of the 20th
century." Beginning with Eohippus, or the Dawn horse, from the Eocene
period, Hartley takes the reader on a fascinating journey, stopping along
the way to discuss hundreds of notable breeds, including Friesians,
Arabians, Andalusians, Thoroughbreds, Shetland and Highland ponies,
Mustangs, and Clydesdales. Also interspersed throughout are notable
horse-and-rider partnerships, such as El Cid and Babieca, as well as over
1,000 full-color photographs, illustrations, and maps, making this ode to
Equus as beautiful as it is fascinating.

The School Library Journal wrote "This title is so well done that
even young adults with little interest in these animals are likely to be
captivated." This is the English-language edition of a fact-filled guide
to the world of horses, originally published in The Netherlands. There are two
main sections: one covering breeds of horses and the other dealing with the care
of the horse and equestrian activities. Fifty breeds of horses and ponies are
described in terms of their origins and physical characteristics. A color
photograph accompanies the description of each breed. The section on breeds is
followed by "Caring for Horses and Equestrian Sports," which includes
an explanation of confirmation points, charts illustrating colors, leg and
facial markings, and habits and characteristics of specific breeds. There are
definitions of equestrian terms as well as sections on equipment, feeding,
grooming, hoof care, equine diseases and disorders, and stable requirements.
Training and riding basics, dressage terminology and exercises, show jumping,
and driving are covered.

businesses. The Source is the most complete listing of horse businesses I
have found, especially for those in the Thoroughbred Industry. Basic listings

charge so any business can be listed. While it doesn't include every feed and
tack store in the world, it does include a wide range of businesses and
specialty companies that can be difficult to locate.

My wife and I have recently begun to ride. To our utter amazement we have
finally found a sport that we both enjoy. As our lessons progressed, I realized
that I would need to do some independent research both for reinforcement of
procedures as well as the acquisition of additional knowledge. I have never used
any of the "Dummy" books but as I scanned the racks this book seemed
to cover most of the topics that I was interested in. The book is absolutely
marvelous. It's very easy to read and some difficult concepts are explained very
simply for the novice. I would unequivocally recommend it for all beginners. I
would also offer my thanks to the authors. Fine job ladies.
