Unicorns
I Have Known

Magical! This is one of the best books on Unicorns I have ever read. It is
unique because it is the only book on the unicorn with photos. Vavra gives you a
new sense of wonder on every page. Taking you to the desert, the tundra, the
forest, the flowers and even the sea. After that you can read up on unicorn
behavior, history, and some of Vavra's own experiences with them. I would recommend
this book to anyone who loves unicorns, and would like to learn more of them. Or
if you love beautiful, breathtaking photography.
Arabians
: The Classic Arabian Horse
by Peter Upton, Rik, Sr. Van Lent, Rik. Jr. Van Lent, Hossein Amirsadeghi
$42.00 - Save $18.00 (30% off list price) -
Both a stunning photographic journey--composed of more than 250 full-color
photographs, arranged by geographical area--and a fascinating history lesson, Arabians
begins with a thorough examination of the horse's origins, which date back to
1700 B.C. Such notable historical figures as the prophet Mohammed and the queen
of Sheba were Arabian devotees. The breed's popularity spread outside of the
Arab world beginning in the last half of the 17th century, peaking in the 19th
and early 20th centuries. Other areas of discussion include the distinct
features and characteristics of the breed (its exquisite head and high tail
carriage as well as its "vigor, courage and great powers of
endurance") and the numerous strains and sub-strains of the breed, which,
when combined with a glossary of Arabic terms and a complete listing of Arabian
horse organizations, registries, and societies, truly make Arabians the
"definitive book on this revered breed."
Horse
People : Writers and Artists on the Horses They Love
by Michael J. Rosen, Stan Fellows
$21.00 - Save $9.00 (30% off list price) - For thousands of years, humankind has
relied on the horse for companionship. Powerful and spirited, yet gentle and
trusting, horses inspire both the hearts and imaginations of many. In Horse
People: Writers and Artists on the Horses They Love, notable horse lovers
collectively celebrate the equine in words and images. Some 25 writers present
stories from the heart, including Jane Smiley's account of overcoming a lifetime
of paralyzing fear by jumping her horse; poet Henry Taylor's tale of Goldheart,
a memorable horse of his youth; and Rita Mae Brown's horse Peggy Sue's valuable
horsy advice. Photographs and paintings, illustrations and sculpture--including
the work of Tess Gallagher, Fritz Scholder, John Derryberry, and Deborah
Butterfield--offer stirring images in both full color and black and white,
skillfully capturing the spirit of horses and of those that love them best.
The
Man Who Listens to Horses
by Monty Roberts
$16.10 - Save $6.90 (30% off list price) - Monty Roberts is, as they say, the real
horse whisperer--even if he does revile the last third of Nicholas Evans's
romance. Yet Roberts also makes clear from the start that listening and close
attention have more to do with gentling an animal than soi-disant whispering. As
far as he's concerned, silent communication can "effectively cross over the
boundary between human (the ultimate fight animal) and horse (the flight
animal). Using their language, their system of communication, I could create a
strong bond of trust. I would achieve cross-species communication." And
achieve it he does. After one short session, he has even the wildest stallion
nickering with ungulate abandon.
Shy
Boy : The Horse Who Came in from the Wild
by Monty Roberts
$21.00 - Save $9.00 (30% off list price) - In Shy Boy, Roberts
returns with the story of a wild mustang he captured and domesticated using his
renowned, nonviolent training technique. Beginning with the stunning Cuyama
Valley in California, where he tracked the young stallion Shy Boy for three
days, and moving on to the horse's gradual acclimation to human contact, Roberts
walks the reader through the slow, detailed process. In the course of this
equine odyssey, he stitches in inspiring anecdotes, as in the case of Samantha,
an ailing 12-year-old who used Monty's method: "She saved a horse from an
untimely end in a slaughterhouse and spared herself further harm--and she had
done it without ever raising a hand or even her voice." However, the real
credit for this book should probably go to the photographer, Christopher Dydyk,
whose 100 or so colorful glossies dominate the book's 236 pages, with dazzling
shots of the ranch, the range, and Monty at work.
