Horse
Genetics
by Ann T. Bowling
$52.00 - A reader wrote: Up to date and very informative on color
genetics.
An excellent way to learn about coat color and general horse genetics-- if you
have a little background. Black and white pictures only. Highly recommended for
someone who wants to do some serious studying on coat color genetics. Good
discussions of examples and limitations to genetic testing. I have read this
book many times and still pull out new information every time. Extensive
discussion on genes and blood markers and linkage. This book is a little on the
technical side, but if you have a little biology/genetics background, very informative.
Equine
Color Genetics
by D. Phillip Sponenberg
$44.95 - A reader wrote: Stands out in morass of mis- and disinformation
and "lore" D. Phillip Sponenberg, DVM, PhD, is one of a mere
handful of real authorities on the inheritance of horse coat color -- a topic
fraught with inherent complexities and burdened down with massive amounts of
"lore" that amounts all too often to nothing more than misinformation
or disinformation. Well illustrated with color plates. Covers latest trait
linkage tests (as for lethal white foal) and results of the author's extensive
and in some cases unprecedented studies of horse color genetics.

the horse industry. This is combined with information about powerful techniques
based on solid scientific research. This book will help you select superior
horses for breeding, racing, or showing. This is important reading for all horse
people, and essential for breeders.

This book is a breeder's "bible" , and is one I would recommend for
everyone, regardless of the size of the reader's breeding operation. The book
gives readable and understandable information on the consequences of breeding
individual animals for specific color and conformation traits. It provides
valuable information on the dominance of specific traits and the likelihood of
those traits being inherited by offspring.
